St. David’s summer music program needs funding
by Beth Gruenke
As a community, St. David’s is in need of raising money for our summer music program. At the time our budget was developed, we were not expecting the changes that we have now experienced, so monies were only budgeted for one Sunday service for this coming summer. We are now planning to continue throughout the summer with our 9:00 a.m. and our 11:00 a.m. services. To make a donation, please write a check to St. David’s Church and write "music donation" in the memo line or put cash in an envelope marked “music donation.” You may place your donation in the plate on Sunday or mail it to the church office. This money will be accepted at both services to support our summer music program for both services.

Graduation Sunday, June 2
Prayers of thanksgiving for high school and college graduates will be offered on Sunday, June 2. Please contact Jackie in the church office with the name of your graduate so we can include them in the prayers. A special blessing will be offered for Jessica Basta who graduates from high school this year.

Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build -- St. David’s-sponsored lunch, Wednesday, June 5
by Caroline Hoff, coordinator
St. David’s will be sponsoring the lunch on Wednesday, June 5 for the 2013 Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build. Here is what we will need:

Lunch volunteers needed: Caroline Hoff is organizing volunteers to cook or serve lunch at noon at the site. To help, contact her at 465-3551.

Cookies and cash needed: We invite you to become involved by donating cookies and/or money to help defray the cost of lunch food. Cookies should be homemade and please label cookies with nuts in them. Please bring your cookies to St. David’s no later than Sunday, June 2. Checks made out to St. David’s with Blitz Build Lunch in the memo line can be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the office. Any money not used will be donated to Habitat.

Prayers needed: If you cannot cook or volunteer, please put Wednesday, June 5, in your prayers. Pray for the workers and the homeowners.

Lawn mowing crew needed
Bob Gronberg is coordinating the lawn mowing duties again this year. You will work with a partner, and there is a riding lawn mower! If you are interested in working on this efficient crew, contact Bob at 979-4614.

Volunteers needed for housekeeping
Jackie will be on vacation May 31 through June 24. We need volunteers who would be willing to clean the building prior to Sunday. If you would like to get in on the fun, sign up at the Communications Center. The job takes about four hours or less time if you have a friend or two help! A list of duties can be found at the communications center.

You are needed -- as a host!
Celebrate that special day with the congregation, or "just because," by being a host for coffee hour or hospitality after services. Sign up at the communications center. There are guidelines to make your hosting experience more enjoyable.  If you have any questions, please contact Judith Scarborough.
Editor’s Note: Read Judith’s “Steaming Dishwasher” article below!

Fear not the steaming dishwasher!
by Judith Scarborough, hospitality chairperson
We can now recycle paper and plastic cups! St. David’s has a new recycling vendor, and they will accept used paper and plastic cups, along with a laundry list of other recyclables from our kitchen. For those who have shied away from doing coffee hour because of the dishwasher, you can now use paper and plastic cups “guilt-free” instead of having to figure out how to use the dishwasher for the crockery cups.

For coffee hour, all you need to do is move the blue recycling basket out next to the trash can, and put the pink tub on the counter there by the trash can (to empty any last bit of beverage into) and folks can put their used paper or plastic cups in the recycling.  We aren’t able to recycle the paper plates, but this is a start! If you have any questions how this will work, please see me. Thank you!

Building & grounds update
by Steve Kellen, Vestry Liaison
A big THANK YOU to Marcia O’Leary who provided consulting and guidance on spraying trees and maintaining the grounds on April 17. THANKS to Mike and Jenean Hughes who have been doing a wonderful job of taking care of the flower and shrub beds on the east side of the church. THANKS also goes out to Bob Gronberg who is heading up the mowing crew, getting the mowers working, picking up trash, cleaning sink drains, ETC. (and lots of that).

It is IMPORTANT to have the grounds well kept and attractive so that the church is inviting to all people. We still need people who are willing to adopt a section of flower / shrub beds. No one person can do it all, but many people can make short work of keeping the grounds beautiful. If you have an interest in helping keeping up the grounds around St. David’s, please contact Steve Kellen.

Worship news -- Life and vitatlity!
by Steve Kellen
The vestry is looking for a few creative people who would like to participate in putting their creativity to work. We would like to start a Worship Committee to come up with ideas to spark up the 9:00 a.m. service. The service will remain the same, however, we would like to do things around the service to spice things up and recognize what is going on around us, such as Memorial Day, Bloomsday, Pentecost, July 4th, Labor Day, etc.  There will be a SHORT meeting for those interested, in the Travis Library after a 9:00 a.m. service  -- probably on May 19 or possibly later.  Keep an eye out for the announcement when the date is settled.  Please come and join us!

Sunday School excitement
by Katie McDaris, Sunday School Coordinator
During May, I’m hoping to pick a warm, sunny Sunday morning for an outing down to the Wall Street Nature Preserve, just minutes from church past Country Homes Blvd. on Wall. Pete Wyman has graciously agreed to guide us through the preserve and talk about the ecosystems and creatures that live there. We will enjoy a picnic while we visit. All are welcome to join us and we can always use more chaperones, so please watch for the date in the bulletins. We will be leaving church at 10:00 a.m. on the appointed morning and will return in time for the 11:00 a.m. service.

Since spring has finally arrived, I am planning several fun activities for our kids, so don’t be surprised to see us outside and around the yard. So much to do, and so little time left for our Sunday School year! We are always looking for new friends to join us, so please consider stopping by.

New Caring Friends coordinator needed
by Holly Chick
As many of you may know, I am planning on moving out of state sometime this summer. A new Caring Friends coordinator is needed. It is really a fairly easy position to fulfill. I have a folder with basic information to be used as a guideline. If you wish to help with this need, please contact me anytime I am at church or call me at home.

A call to serve (drive)
by Jeanne Mitchell, vestry member
It has come to the vestry’s attention that we have some people in our congregation who no longer are able to drive. The only way they can get to church is if someone brings them and takes them home. What a wonderful opportunity to serve in a very special way!. If you could help with this ministry on a regular or occasional basis, please contact the office or call Jeanne Mitchell.

Vestry meeting highlights, April 18, 2013
by Barbara Gronberg, vestry member
The treasurer informed us that March income was low and our diocesan asking payment had to be delayed. He is hopeful that pledges will be paid, and we will catch up in our budget. The summer shortfall of funds for music was explained and a possible way to continue music at both services was discussed. The shortfall occurred because it was assumed in budget making that we would have only one Sunday service this summer, however, we will continue with two services through the summer. It was suggested we collect donations for the music program from both congregations so all services will be covered with music.

We are entering into a more comprehensive recycling program so look for posted information before dumping.

John is to meet with the Rev. Cn. Paul Lebens-Englund about where we are to go next, then Paul and the Bishop will meet with the vestry, shortly followed by a meeting with the entire congregation.

Vestry minutes available
Approved copies of the most recent vestry minutes are posted in Stretch Hall and at the communications center. Colored copies you may take home are also in both places.

Columbarium

Consider making your final plans by purchasing a niche in our attractive columbarium in the quiet memorial garden on the Wall Street side of our building. An individual niche costs $400, with family members being able to purchase adjoining niches. Your questions are welcomed; contact Jean Rose.
